About Centre

Established in 1831, Centre Township is a mostly rural/suburban community in southern St. Joseph County. While a small portion of the township lies within South Bend’s city limits, most of Centre’s 14,400 residents live in one of many single-family housing developments or small, long-established neighborhoods, as well as on family farms.

Centre’s population has remained roughly the same over recent decades, but its total taxable assessed valuation (AV) has steadily increased. While comprising only 4% of the county’s total land area at 19.5 square miles, Centre’s 2025 AV of $848 million represents nearly 17% of the county’s total, ranking it among the top third of the county’s 13 townships.

As with all Indiana townships, Centre is governed by an elected three-person Board and Trustee. Their primary responsibilities are to provide residents with fire protection and poor relief (temporary funding for basic needs) as well as other services.
